Delhi Police on Monday helped a South African delegate attending the BRICS Summit recover a bag containing around ₹3 lakh in US dollars and Indian currency after he accidentally left it in a cab while returning from Gurugram to Delhi on Sunday evening. The delegate, Dumisa Morris Sobekwe, was staying at a hotel near Connaught Place and was due to fly back to South Africa from Delhi airport. Police said he received his bag with the entire cash amount intact just 30 minutes before his scheduled departure. Joint commissioner of police (New Delhi) Nupur Prasad said the entire operation, which involved tracing the cab driver and recovering the bag, was completed in less than an hour after the matter was reported to Barakhambha Road police station. Police received information from the hotel on Sunday evening that the South African delegate had inadvertently left his bag containing US dollars and Indian currency worth around ₹3 lakh in the cab. He had hired the vehicle to travel to Gurugram for personal work. “While returning, he accidentally left his bag in the cab. Soon after the matter was brought to our notice with information that he had an upcoming flight in about an hour, a dedicated team was formed, which swiftly identified the cab and traced its driver,” deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma said.

According to Sharma, the police initially faced difficulty contacting the driver as his phone was switched off. Another team was then deployed to locate the cab. “We successfully recovered the cash and the bag and returned them to the delegate so he could catch his flight on time with his belongings,” Sharma said. The delegate ultimately received his belongings before heading to the airport, allowing him to continue his journey with the full amount of cash and other items recovered.
