Viral Video Shows Massive Landslide Disrupting Chaulani River Flow In Nepal’s Darchula!

A massive landslide in Nepal’s Darchula district sent a large volume of earth and rocks into the Chaulani River, briefly disrupting its flow.

A major landslide occurred in the mountainous Darchula district of Nepal, where falling rocks, soil and other debris spilled into the Chaulani River. The sudden movement of material caused the river’s flow to slow temporarily, creating concern among people living in nearby areas. The incident was reported in the Bhattar area of Api Himal Rural Municipality 2. The steep Himalayan terrain in the region makes the area particularly vulnerable to landslides, especially when slopes become unstable. Videos circulating online show a huge mass of debris coming down the mountainside and reaching the river.

The footage has drawn widespread attention because of the sheer volume of material involved and the potential consequences of a river blockage. A temporary obstruction in a mountain river can become dangerous if water begins accumulating behind the debris. A sudden collapse of the blockage could send a strong surge downstream, potentially threatening communities and infrastructure located along the riverbanks. Local authorities responded by monitoring the affected stretch and keeping security personnel on alert. Officials were particularly concerned about the possibility of additional debris coming down from the unstable slope.

The situation later improved as water from the river began cutting through and carrying away portions of the deposited material. This helped restore the river’s movement and reduced the immediate concern over a prolonged blockage. Despite the improvement, authorities are expected to continue monitoring the area as unstable slopes can trigger further landslides without warning. Residents in vulnerable locations have also been urged to remain cautious and follow official instructions. The latest incident highlights the continuing risks faced by communities across Nepal’s mountainous regions, where landslides, floods and unstable slopes can rapidly disrupt river systems and threaten settlements.
