Air India Express Flight Turns Back Mid Air After Engine Oil Drops!
The affected engine was later shut down after its oil pressure entered the danger zone, with the aircraft landing safely at Cochin International Airport.
An Air India Express flight operating from Cochin to Abu Dhabi had to return to its departure airport on Monday after the crew detected a rapidly falling oil quantity in one of its engines. Flight IX 415, operated by a Boeing 737, was around 50 minutes into its journey and cruising at approximately 36,000 feet when the pilots noticed that the oil level in Engine 1 was dropping rapidly. The crew assessed the situation and decided that continuing towards Abu Dhabi was not the safest option.
The pilots carried out a structured FORDEC assessment before deciding to abandon the Abu Dhabi sector and turn the aircraft back towards Kochi. The commander also informed air traffic control about the decision to return. The situation became more serious during the return journey when the oil pressure in Engine 1 began fluctuating and eventually entered the danger zone. The crew then followed the applicable non-normal procedures and shut down the affected engine. Despite the engine shutdown, the Boeing 737 continued its return to Cochin International Airport and landed safely. Reports so far have not indicated any injuries resulting from the incident.
The exact reason behind the rapid loss of engine oil has not yet been established. Further technical inspection of the aircraft and engine is expected to determine what caused the abnormal oil reading. The incident highlights the importance of continuous monitoring of aircraft systems during flight. The crew's decision to turn back after identifying the deteriorating engine parameters allowed the aircraft to return to its departure airport rather than continuing on a longer international sector. Further details from Air India Express and aviation authorities are awaited as the technical issue is examined.
