Gurugram Biker Questions Hit-and-Run Accused: ‘Why Didn’t You Stop?’
A Delhi biker injured in an alleged Gurugram hit-and-run questioned the accused driver’s claim that he felt sorry for her, asking why he fled without checking on her. Police are searching for the suspect and investigating the incident.
Sia said the incident could have had much more serious consequences if it had happened at a different time.
A Delhi woman who was injured after a man allegedly rammed his car into her motorcycle during a road-rage incident on Gurugram’s Golf Course Road on Sunday said she could have suffered fatal injuries. Responding to the suspect’s claim that he felt sorry for her, the woman, who identifies herself as Sia on Instagram, questioned why he did not stop after the collision. “If you felt so sorry for me, why did you not stop at that time?” Sia said in a video posted on social media late Monday. She said it was the driver’s responsibility to stop after hitting someone and check whether the person needed medical assistance.
Sia’s response came after Kalyan Bainsla, the suspect, told a television channel that he did not realise a woman was riding the motorcycle and that he had not hit her intentionally. “I felt sorry for her after the incident. She was repeatedly accelerating and then slowing down,” he said. Bainsla remained on the run on Tuesday, while police were expected to record Sia’s statement. Police said multiple teams had been formed to trace and arrest him.
Sia said the consequences could have been much worse if the incident had occurred under slightly different circumstances. She said she could have suffered serious fractures, internal injuries or even died. “Due to such people, roads of Gurugram and Delhi feel unsafe,” she said. The incident came to police attention after a video of the crash went viral on social media. According to police, Sia was riding with a group of bikers when Bainsla, a gym owner from Palwal and former kabaddi player, allegedly began following her and repeatedly signalled for her to stop while driving dangerously close to her. Police said Bainsla appeared to be drunk at the time. Footage from the incident allegedly shows the car moving towards Sia’s motorcycle before hitting it. One of her friends reportedly followed the vehicle and managed to intercept it, but the driver allegedly sped away. Two other people were also reportedly inside the car.
Sia said Bainsla should have immediately stopped after the collision and checked on her instead of leaving the spot. She also rejected his claim that he did not know a woman was riding the motorcycle. “I have very long hair and a braid. You came, took action, and asked me to stop the bike,” she said, adding that videos from the incident showed the car following her before the collision. She also questioned Bainsla’s focus on the number of people visible in the videos, saying the footage clearly captured what happened. According to her, one video showed the car moving from the first lane towards the third lane before hitting her, while another recording from her own camera captured the collision and her fall onto the road. Sia further criticised Bainsla for expressing sympathy while allegedly failing to stop after the crash. She said the people inside the vehicle did not even briefly check whether she was alive or seriously injured before leaving the spot.
She also objected to Bainsla allegedly portraying himself as a victim because of the attention the incident brought to his family. Sia said incidents like this make women feel unsafe while travelling on the roads of Delhi and Gurugram and stressed the need for motorists to follow road-safety rules. Sia’s father said his daughter was expected to file a police complaint on Tuesday. He said she initially did not tell him about the incident and that he learned about it after news reports about the crash began appearing on television. Assistant Commissioner of Police Dharambir Singh said Sia’s statement was expected to be recorded on Tuesday. “Her lawyer and family members are in touch with police now. The suspect is on the run. Multiple teams have been formed to arrest him at the earliest,” he said.
