‘You’re Zero At Dancing’: Bosco Recalls Katrina Kaif’s Early Days Before ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’
Choreographer Bosco Martis and Farah Khan recalled Katrina Kaif’s journey as a dancer, revealing how she overcame early criticism and transformed her skills after ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’.
Bosco called ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’ a turning point in Katrina Kaif’s career, recalling how she had earlier faced criticism and humiliation over her dancing skills. Katrina Kaif has delivered several memorable dance performances in Bollywood, but choreographer Bosco Martis recently recalled a difficult phase in the actor’s early career when she was criticised for her dancing skills. During a recent podcast hosted by Bosco and Caesar, the choreographers discussed their journey in Bollywood and their experiences of working with filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan. The conversation also touched upon Katrina’s transformation as a dancer and the impact of her performance in the popular song ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’ from Tees Maar Khan. Bosco described ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’ as a “game changer” for Katrina. Farah agreed, recalling that Katrina was not widely recognised as a dancer at the time. She also mentioned that Katrina had previously appeared in songs such as ‘Touch Me’ and that her first song choreographed by Farah was ‘Just Chill’ from Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya. Bosco then recalled an incident from Katrina’s early career, saying that she had faced harsh criticism from a choreographer despite putting in significant effort. He claimed the choreographer had told Katrina, “Aap zero ho dance mein, toh aapko chhod dena chahiye” (You are zero when it comes to dancing, so you should quit). According to Bosco, such comments may have motivated Katrina to work harder and improve her dancing. Farah reacted to the revelation by saying that Katrina could not have been a “zero” and estimated that she may have been a four or five at the time. She added that after ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’, Katrina’s dancing had improved significantly, describing her as a “nine or 10”. Farah also mentioned Katrina’s later performances in songs such as ‘Chikni Chameli’ and ‘Kala Chashma’, while Bosco and Caesar agreed that the actor had delivered impressive performances. Katrina had previously spoken about facing criticism over her dancing abilities. In an earlier interview with Bollywood Bubble, she recalled being told that she could not dance and said the criticism initially made her believe she might never become a good dancer. She credited Bosco with encouraging her and telling her that she was capable of dancing and only needed to work on certain aspects of her performance. Bosco-Caesar later choreographed her for the song ‘Touch Me’ from Race. Over the years, Katrina has established herself as one of Bollywood’s most recognised dance performers. From ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’ and ‘Chikni Chameli’ to ‘Kamli’, ‘Kala Chashma’, ‘Swag Se Swagat’, ‘Afghan Jalebi’ and ‘Nachde Ne Saare’, her performances have remained popular among audiences.
